Argentina Travel Season & When To Visit

The best time to go will somewhat depend on where you want to go and what you want to do. For example, visiting Buenos Aires is ideal in the spring, between September and November, or autumn, between March and May, when it's cooler. Springtime has the added benefit of flowers in bloom. During the summer months, December through February, the city is both humid and hot and the locals head for the beach.

Summer is a great time to go to Patagonia, however, especially as the region may be impassable during the winter. The winter season is ideal for people who are looking to hit the ski resorts. The season for skiing goes from June to August, with August being especially busy.

Winter is also a good time for visiting the northwest of the country and Iguaz˙ Falls when it will be cooler and the dryer. These locations are also good to visit during the spring when the climate will still be good but the crowds will be less. Autumn as well can offer opportunities to travel that are less crowded. In addition, traveling outside of peak season can sometimes offer cost savings.

Other considerations regarding when to travel are if some of the festivals are of particular interest. Many towns celebrate Carnaval, or Mardi Gras, although it is not as much of an event as it is in Brazil. In Buenos Aires, it is called the Fiesta de las Murgas, and is celebrated each weekend in February.

In Salta, the Gaucho Parade happens each year on June 16th where one can see gauchos dressed in their traditional dress and listen to folk music. For those who are heading to Argentina for the tango, the World Tango Festival is held each year in early to mid-October. Many of the events are held in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of San Telmo.
