Chile Travel Overview
Chile is a long country along the western coast of South America. It is so long that it spans more than half the length of the continent, about 4300 km. This length includes a great variety of ecosystems and, indeed, it is the scenery that brings most people here.

CHILE TRAVEL OVERVIEW

In the north, there is the Atacama Desert, in the far south there are glaciers and in between are mountains, lakes, volcanoes, rivers and more. The country even includes Easter Island lying far out in the Pacific Ocean and requiring close to six hours to fly to.

Because of Chile's length, it can take some time to go from one place to another, especially if your budget does not allow for flying. Therefore, it's a good idea to plan what you want to do in advance if your time is limited. A shorter amount of time could mean restricting yourself to one region or another, for example.

Not surprisingly with this variety of landscapes, one of the main reasons that people travel to Chile is for the many options for adventure travel. Most of the areas offer ample opportunities for hiking and there are also opportunities for white water rafting, mountain biking, surfing, horseback riding, kayaking and more. For those who prefer a less strenuous holiday, the sights can be seen without exerting yourself.

There are some cities that are worth taking seeing as well and touring them can make a nice change from roughing it. The largest city, Santiago, offers a chance to get to know the modern culture of Chile. Valparaíso, often mentioned in books by Isabel Allende, offers a bohemian charm all its own.

Although not regarded highly for its gastronomic options, one can find a great variety of fresh seafood along the coast of Chile. Many of the wines produced in the country are outstanding, particularly the reds, and it's possible to take a tour of some of the vineyards. Wine lovers trying to save money will be thrilled at the quality of many of the lower cost offerings.
