Chile Travel Season & When To Visit

When to visit Chile is going to depend to some degree on where you want to go and what you want to do. This is especially true if you wish to go to the Patagonia region in the south of the country. For a trip including that area, you should plan on going during the summer months, November to March, as it can be impossible to travel there during the winter due to the snows.

During the summer months, the weather is generally warm and dry, with very little rain. There is also more daylight. This is a great time of year to take advantage of all the many outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, rafting, kayaking and horseback riding. It's also an ideal time to take advantage of the beach towns. The spring months between September and November can be a great time to tour the Lakes District and Torres del Paine National Park.

If you're planning on visiting one of Chile's ski resorts, however, you'll want to make your travel dates fall within the winter months between June and September, with August providing some of the best conditions. For other attractions, you'll want to check the local situation. For example, some places in Torres del Paine National Park will be closed during some of the winter months.

In the north, there are some places such as the Atacama Desert that can be visited at any time during the year. Temperatures can be extremely hot during the summer although the part that is located at high altitude can be cold throughout the year. November through February provide the ideal times for the desert although there is some rain then.

Easter Island can be visited any time during the year as well but are best during March and April. At this time, the weather is not too hot and there tends to be fewer tourists.

The high tourist season is considered to be between November and March when not only foreigners but also Chileans take time to visit the country's attraction. During January and February, there are many fiestas throughout the country. If you're looking for more of a budget trip, you may find better deals during the low season.
