Located 600 miles of the coast of Ecuador (they belong to Ecuador), they are declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco, and the number of visitors per year is strictly controlled in order to preserve their amazing flora and wild life. The Galapagos Islands is where Charles Darwin's observations lead him to his Theory of Evolution after his visit in 1835.

Galapagos Travel Season & When To Visit

The islands enjoy a comfortable climate with typically warm days and cool nights. Dry season is from June through December and both the water and air is a bit cooler.

It's at this time of year that both the mammals as well as the birds are more active. If there's a specific one that interests you, you may want to find out when that particular species tends to be more active as this can vary. Because there are more fish in the water at this time, many divers prefer visiting the islands in these months.

The months between December and May are referred to as the warm season. At this time, both the air and the sea are a bit warmer and it rains every day for a short time. Because of the warmer water, this can be a more comfortable time for snorkeling and swimming but there won't be quite as many fish to see. It is the breeding season for the birds that live on land. You can also see turtles nesting and sea lions mating with the pups appearing in March or April. Whichever month you visit in, there will be plenty to see and the temperatures should be fairly comfortable.

Tourism tends to go down a bit during the months of April and May as well as during September and October. Flights from the mainland to the islands are somewhat cheaper during May and October so if you can save a bit on both a cruise and your flight at this time of year.

If you're going to book a cruise, especially during high season, you will want to book ahead of time if you know which yacht you want and when you plan on traveling. Otherwise, you may find that there are no available spaces when you are ready to take your vacation.
